Uzima Wa Afya is an African philosophy on wellness, which means 'Wholeness of Health' in Kiswahili.
We at Uzima Wa Afya believe wellness is not the absence of challenges in one's state of health. Rather, the ability to seek and maintain abundant and balanced health in one's whole being. For, everything in life is connected, and so is health and wellness.
MISSION: To support wholistic wellness through the adoption of Uzima Wa Afya/‘Wholeness of Health’ philosophy in life-education-work spaces.
VISION: Wholistically healthy and hence sustainable ways of being in life-education-work spaces.
PHILOSOPHY: We center Uzima Wa Afya philosophy through 'Wholeness of Health' practices, knowledge-base and strategies across life-education-work spaces.
WHAT WE DO: Educate on the importance, model, and strategize on the adoption of the Uzima Wa Afya/‘Wholeness of Health’ philosophy, to facilitate sustainable ways of being in life-education-work spaces.
Wairimu is a Healing Conversationalist and Strategist whose speciality is in supporting and guiding individuals and their families, and members of various educational and professional communities in identifying and closing gaps in their respective aspects of their health, to facilitate: restoration; healing; and recreation of sustainable meaningful living.
Wairimu holds Bachelor and Master degrees in Social Work, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Social Justice Education, at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education-University of Toronto. Wairimu’s humane and hence anti-oppressive lens is grounded in her commitment to working for wholistic wellness at individual, familial, communal, organizational, institutional and societal levels, through the incorporation of the Uzima Wa Afya/Wholeness of Health philosophy.
Wairimu is also a graduate student at an African Indigenous culture and spirituality school. She therefore capitalizes on these African Indigenous knowledges and wisdom, incorporating African-healing-centered approaches in her work with individuals and their families, and members of various educational and professional communities. Wairimu takes a wholistic approach to wellness, centering people’s life stories within the context of their ancestral and diverse collective histories, and collaboratively works to strengthen people’s sense of dignity. Wairimu is committed to wellness practices that are invested in: restoration; healing; and recreation of dignified, meaningful and sustainable living.
As a Scholar, Wairimu is at the forefront of challenging colonial social norms that perpetuate individual and collective pains, fearlessly and unapologetically pushing the boundaries of truth beyond social fear that binds us. She is hopeful for a healthier society that supports overall Wholeness of Health.
As a Healing Poet, Wairimu shares her passed-down knowledges and wisdom, honouring her ancestors’ voices, in her devotion to restoration to wholeness of health.
